Prof Pepeta expressed his excitement about the new medical programme and developing a professional education unit. He acknowledges the many challenges that the faculty faces, but stresses the importance of changing mindsets and training students to become health practitioners with a focus on helping improve the communities in which they practice.
Prof Pepeta added,“How can we say that we are of service to the society if we are not serving … communities that require the services?"
To better service the student, and ultimately the communities in need, the faculty aims to restructure some of its processes and curriculum in order to provide the best educational outcomes, remain socially relevant and support equity in health.
